Sustainable technology transfer with China in the spotlight

Steinbeis SUTM head office opens in Beijing

Technology plays an ever more important role in business and in our private lives. The rapid rate at which technologies are developing – coupled with their diversity and growing complexity – means that effective technology transfer is increasingly key to their success. The SUTM Steinbeis Center of Sustainable Technology and Management GmbH has established the Chinese subsidiary SUTM Beijing Ltd. in order to implement sustainable technology transfer with China. The new company’s head office opened in Beijing in April.

The “make and buy” strategy in China’s 14th five-year plan introduces new measures to strengthen Chinese research and innovation in domestic enterprises. The 2024 international ZGC Forum held in Beijing at the end of April discussed ways of strengthening knowledge and technology transfer from universities and research institutions to create products and services.

ZGC Forum spotlights Steinbeis model

The presentation of the Steinbeis model as a means of implementing sustainable technology transfer structures in China provided valuable input for this discussion. At the invitation of the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission, the Steinbeis technology transfer model and the Steinbeis University’s project competence degree were presented at several different forums by honorary trustee of the Steinbeis Foundation, Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Johann Löhn, and SUTM Managing Director, Dr. Bertram Lohmüller.

SUTM Beijing Ltd.’s new head office was officially opened at an event attended by some 150 distinguished guests from government, business and the research community, including representatives of German organizations. The event took place during the Sino-German Meeting on Technology & Innovation in Beijing on 29 April 2024.

At the reception, the Mayor of Beijing, Yin Yong, underlined the importance of the new Steinbeis Enterprise for sustainable technology transfer both within China and between China and Germany. He stressed that present-day challenges such as reducing our carbon footprint, the green energy transition, food security and healthcare can only be overcome if all nations work together.

As part of the international Steinbeis Network, SUTM Beijing will strengthen the alliance for green technology transfer between Germany and China. The first projects between German and Chinese business enterprises are already being implemented in the fields of green hydrogen, green transportation and sustainable industrialization.
