From resonance to resilience

Steinbeis experts use the systemic view as one of the most effective self-management and management tools

As Albert Einstein said all those years ago, “everything is energy”. The Steinbeis Transfer Institute competence institute unisono in Ulm is showing how this concept can also be helpfully applied to HR management and in particular self-management. The Steinbeis experts run resilience coach and systemic coach training courses with business trainer Susanne Hollmann. The systemic view offers people insights into their own personality and is also a powerful coaching tool.

Sometimes when we meet someone, we get an instant feeling for what they’re like. In other words, we resonate with the “vibe” they give off. Why is this? Our body gives off its own particular energy resonance. But when we meet someone, they can only recognize the part of it that they resonate with themselves. This is our big opportunity to learn more about ourselves. The aim is to recognize and resolve all the “buttons” within us that can be pushed by external factors. All those external triggers can also be found within our own system.

Positive resonance strengthens our self-confidence

If we resonate with something positive, it immediately feels good even when we meet someone for the first time. Susanne Hollmann uses this effect in a “positive psychology” approach that helps to build resilience. Having recognized an external factor, we now turn our gaze inwards. Where do I recognize this positive quality in my own, internal system and how does the experience of it feel? The insights gained through this approach strengthen both our self-awareness – helping us become more aware of ourselves one bit at a time – and our self-confidence. This exercise is also particularly useful for teams. It starts by focusing on the positive aspects in one’s colleagues before turning one’s attention inwards to one’s own self-reliance. Each positive quality that we are aware of can be drawn on as a resource during a crisis.

Negative resonance helps with personality development

The truth, however, is that we’re likelier to notice our resonance if we resonate with something negative. In these cases, we’re more reluctant to look inwards to seek out this negative trait in our own system. But it is precisely by doing this that we begin to develop our personality at a deeper level. The first step is to put an exact name to what we find. For instance, if you’re a manager and you see pushback from an employee who is always saying “yes, but…”, you need to look inwards and find this trait in yourself. Importantly, however, you should only do this if you resonate with this behavior. You know you are resonating with it if the pushback annoys you – that means it’s time for a change of perspective. Sometimes you may need help from a coach – we all have our blind spots, after all, and they can be difficult to pinpoint. It’s also useful to bear in mind that pushback is often a form of self-protection. So perhaps when you look inwards you should ask where you need to protect yourself. Once we’ve found this part of you, we can work with it.

We all know people who are constantly pushing our buttons. They never stop, and worse still, as soon as one of them disappears off the scene, another one pops up and starts pushing your buttons all over again. The systemic view enables new insights and strengthens your own agency. It turns your focus inwards, away from an external irritation that you resonate with. And what’s the point of this? It helps your self-awareness, makes you reflect more on yourself, and by doing so strengthens your self-efficacy as a manager.

Steinbeis training strengthens your personal resilience

The team at the Steinbeis+Akademie’s Steinbeis Transfer Institute competence institute unisono and business trainer Susanne Hollmann provide training to strengthen businesses, managers and employees. The courses include everything from a workshop on self-management for managers to certified resilience coach/mentor training and systemic coach/mentor training for resilience and sustainable development. The focus is as much on developing participants’ personality as on communicating knowledge and methodologies. The training fills your methodological toolkit with practical tools that strengthen your resilience in everyday situations and help you resolve blockages by recognizing them and addressing them with systemic techniques. Participants also get to put what they have learned into practice in between modules. Both training courses lead to a Certificate or Diploma of Advanced Studies at the Steinbeis+Akademie.
